50th Anniversary Events

Join Rollins CDC for a semester filled with events celebrating 50 years of hands-on learning for Rollins students, faculty, staff, and children.

January 2025

    Symbolic Languages: Children’s Understandings of the Collection

    January 18 – May 11 | Rollins Museum of Art

    The exhibition, Symbolic Languages: Children’s Understandings of the Collection showcases how children aged 2 to 5 perceive and interpret art, inspired by the Reggio Emilia principle of using “one hundred languages” to communicate.

    Curated in partnership with the Rollins College Child Development & Student Research Center at Hume House, it features works by artists, including Elizabeth Catlett and Chuck Close. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication including a research study and an essay on the Child Development Center’s (CDC) history.

    Family Opening Day at the Rollins Museum of Art Symbolic Languages: Children’s Understandings of the Collection

    Saturday, January 18, 10 a.m. – noon | Rollins Museum of Art

    Drop in to the Rollins Museum of Art for a special family-friendly opening of Symbolic Languages. The open house will be an opportunity to privately preview the exhibition before it opens to the public. Child-friendly refreshments will be available. Remarks by CDC and RMA staff will be at 11 a.m.

    Lecture: Who’s in Charge Here? Sharing Authority with Young Children in Museums with Nicole Cromartie

    Tuesday, February 4, 6 p.m. | Rollins Museum of Art

    Join us for this lecture with Nicole Cromartie, Director of Learning and Engagement, Clyfford Still Museum. In 2019, the Clyfford Still Museum embarked on a groundbreaking project, inviting young children to co-curate an exhibition. Over three years, 250+ children and educators collaborated to shape the exhibition Clyfford Still, Art, and the Young Mind (2022). In dialogue with Symbolic Languages, this keynote will explore the impact of sharing curatorial authority with young children.

    Join us for an engaging story time and activity with New York Times bestselling author-illustrator Andy J. Pizza.

    Andy J. Pizza is a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of many books for children and adults, including A Sundae with Everything On It (2024), Invisible Things (2023), and A Pizza with Everything On It (2021). Andy is also the creator of the popular podcast, Creative Pep Talk.

    Join us for an engaging book reading and discussion on topics including self-love, creativity, growth mindset, and neurodiversity with bestselling author-illustrator, podcast host, and neurodivergence advocate, Andy J. Pizza.

    Exhibition Tour co-led by Adult Curators

    Learn more about the process of developing Symbolic Languages during this informal tour led by curators David Matteson, Associate Curator of Education; Dr. Alice Davidson, Executive Director of the CDC; and Diane Doyle, Director of the CDC, for a special tour through the collection.
