Level 3 – Monitoring | Hurricane Debby Update – August 5, 2024, at 11:30 a.m.

Tropical Storm Debby became Hurricane Debby overnight

Current conditions:

Hurricane Debby has made landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida.

We do not expect any delays or closures as a result of Hurricane Debby.

Current weather impacts:

Rollins is experiencing rainbands with periods of moderate to heavy showers, gusty winds (15-20 mph), and lightning.

A Tornado Warning was issued this morning for areas of Polk County and western Lake County.

The potential for a tornado still exists as rainbands and squall lines pass.

Central Florida forecast:

Rainbands will continue to move across the area this morning and should become more scattered this afternoon. Periods of on and off showers, potential gusty winds and a strong storm will exist into the evening. However, it is not expected that winds will exceed Tropical Storm force at the College.

We currently have no reports of damage at the College.

Watches and Warnings:

A Tornado Watch has been extended for Central Florida, including Orange County, until 4 p.m.

A Wind Advisory is in effect for Central Florida, including Orange County, until 8 p.m.

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Lake County.

Rollins College Emergency Management continues to monitor the storm and receive information from Orange County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service.

Level 3 – Monitoring | Tropical Storm Debby Update – August 4, 2024, at 12:30 p.m.

Tropical Storm Debby is expected to become a hurricane before making landfall.

Current conditions:

Tropical Storm Debby is located west of Naples, Florida, 225 miles south-southwest of Cedar Key, moving north-northwest at 13 mph, with sustained winds of 60 mph. Tropical storm winds extend outward 140 miles to the east of the center of the storm.

Forecast track:

Tropical Storm Debby is expected to strengthen to a Category 1 hurricane before turning north-northeast to make landfall along Florida’s Big Bend area on Monday. Debby’s movement is expected to slow before, or at landfall as it makes its way across North Florida and Georgia.

Central Florida impacts:

Tropical Storm Debby’s forecast continues to show its closest approach to East Central Florida Sunday night into Monday morning.

Rain bands will increase Sunday afternoon into Monday, and may contain strong storms, periods of heavy rainfall (2-4 inches), potential sustained winds of 20-30 mph, and potential tropical storm wind gusts of 40-45 mph.

Based on current forecast models, Metro Orlando is not expected to experience tropical storm-sustained winds. There is a potential for isolated tornadoes.

Any changes in the forecast track back to the east, landfall, or strength increases may result in changes to our impacts.

Watches and Warnings

A Tropical Storm Watch is issued for Lake County.

Continue to monitor local forecasts and updates for any forecast track or impact changes. Due to the forecast potential for gusty winds, we recommend securing areas of debris or other materials that may become a projectile causing injuries or damage.

Rollins College Emergency Management continues to monitor the storm but does not anticipate any delays or closures for the College. Continue to monitor the Emergency website (rollins.edu/emergency) for updates.
