What You Will Learn Studying History
The mission of Department of History is to make you aware of how historical thinking can help you understand who you are, where you came from, and how you can make intelligent decisions about where you are going. Studying the past will allow you the knowledge to better understand forces shaping contemporary debates and issues.
Global Citizenship
Our course offerings are global in scope and focus on key ethical, political, social, and economic struggles throughout history. You will begin your journey in our department with a variety of intensely focused courses. You will then learn research methodology before taking your upper-division classes that will expose you to a wide range of global experiences. Our history major also includes optional annual field studies that will expose you to different cultures and their stories as we travel together to China, Germany, Greece, or Vietnam.
As a history major, you will become a global citizen who understands how historical events connect to contemporary concerns.
Responsible Leadership
We believe that the study of history is central to preparing you to be a responsible leader by giving you the conceptual framework and practical tools to improve the world in which you live.
Our major teaches a wide array of skills that will prepare you well to lead a meaningful life after college. Your classroom studies will be augmented by faculty mentoring, field studies, and community engagement activities, in which you will interact with diverse sets of people. You will also learn to work closely with other students, and you may grow your leadership skills running our honors society, Phi Alpha Theta. In addition, you can practice responsible leadership in a variety of internships both here in Orlando and around the country, many of which will count directly toward your major.
