China: Summer Field Study
ASA 295F: China - From Rich Cultural Traditions to Postmodern Society
This field study will feature a well-organized and diverse itinerary, designed to promote intercultural understanding and offer enriching learning experiences in global citizenship education. With a central focus on Zhejiang Province, a modern wonder of economic prosperity and social vibrancy in Southeast China, enrolled students will explore ancient Chinese civilization firsthand in Hangzhou, experience vibrant pulses of contemporary China in Shanghai, and observe China's technological progress through company visits to Alibaba Group, Zero Motors, and others. The goal of the field study is for Rollins students to gain insights into the dynamics of modern China while allowing participants to explore the rich ancient Chinese culture. We will visit both historical and modern sites, meet people from different walks of life, and converse with college students from Zhejiang University, one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the country and a leading research university in China. The 14-day itinerary will provide our student learners a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in China's intangible cultural heritage and the humanistic landscape in Hangzhou, Ningbo, Jinhua and Shanghai.
