HIS 305F: Vietnam - Culture and History

Tour Vietnam and learn more about the history and culture of this fascinating place! Visit many of the nation’s 54 ethnic minorities. Explore the bustling business center of Ho Chi Minh City and the elegant capital of Hanoi. This trip will focus on the history of Vietnam, including the American involvement in the country, and how that history has shaped the culture and economy of the modern nation. Students will fly to Dien Bien Phu--the site of the defeat of French colonial forces, view the ruins of the Champa empire, hike with Tay natives along the Laos border, explore the palaces of the Nguyen dynasty, and enjoy an evening at the opera. At the same time, students will enjoy world-renown cuisine and experience a wide variety of indigenous and colonial art and architecture.

  • Prerequisites: History of Vietnam or Decade of Decisions: 1960s
  • Course Requirements: Attendance at pre-trip meetings, in-country attendance, participation in regular discussions and debriefings, individual site presentation with accompanying reflection paper, cultural reflection assignment, and post-trip survey.
  • Anticipated Number of Students: 14 
  • Estimated Undergraduate Program Fee: $2,480
  • Program Fee Includes: Tuition, housing, on-site transportation, on-site activities, gratuities, some meals, program administration, and emergency insurance.
  • Estimated Additional Costs: Round-trip airfare to/from Orlando International Airport (MCO) $1,500, passport $165, visa $25, most meals $300, personal expenses $125, federal loan fees $0, books/course materials $0, and professional licensure/certification $0.
  • Visa: Required for U.S. citizens
  • Special Notifications: Students should be prepared for substantial walking on uneven ground, use of stairs, and participation in strenuous activities. Areas travelled in will also have high levels of air pollution. There will also be on-site travel that could induce motion sickness and areas with high altitude and heights. There will be limited food options for students with restricted diets and allergies. Due to the risks of Typhoid and Hepatitis A, leaders recommend preventative medications prior to travel.
