ASA 2XX: China - A Journey of Culture through China
From the Temple of Confucius and Cradles of Daoism in Shandong to the Great Wall, Forbidden City, and Summer Palace in Beijing! Confucianism and Daoism, the ancient wisdom of China spanning over 2000 years, have profoundly influenced the culture, philosophy, and religions of not only China but also East Asia, leaving a lasting impact on the world. The founding figures of Confucianism and Daoism, Confucius and Laozi respectively, were great thinkers, philosophers, and educators during the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. Embarking on a journey of culture in China, which begins in Shandong, the hometown of Confucius. There, we will visit the Temple of Confucius, a UNESCO site comprising over 100 buildings, along with the cemetery containing Confucius’ tomb and the remains of over 100,000 of his descendants. Besides, we will explore the family mansion of Confucius, boasting 152 buildings. Continuing the journey, Mount Lao, one of the cradles of Daoism, beckons visitors to explore the Taiqing Palace, the largest and oldest preserved Daoist temple, constructed in 140 B.C. Finally, the journey culminates in Beijing, the capital city of China, where we will experience the country's rich history through visits to iconic landmarks such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace.

- Prerequisites: Due to visa requirements, all applicants must have a valid passport by October 10, 2024. Applicants that do not provide a copy of their passport in their application before the deadline, will be required to show proof that they have ordered their passport already and within a processing timeframe that does not exceed October 10. - Course Requirements: Daily reflective journals including photos in Shandong and Beijing, cultural/religious artifacts paper, and final reflection paper
- Anticipated Number of Students: 24
- Estimated Program Fee: $970
- Program Fee Includes: Tuition, housing, all meals, on-site activities, program administration, and emergency insurance.
- Estimated Additional Costs: Roundtrip airfare from Orlando International Airport (MCO) $1800, passport $165, visa $140, personal expenses $125, federal loan fees $0, books/course materials $0, and professional licensure/certification $0.
- Special Notifications: Please note, this program is grant dependent meaning it will only run if Rollins receives a grant that we are currently awaiting approval on. If you require a global experience this winter to graduate or feel it is your only term to study abroad, we highly encourage you to apply to a back up program since this one is not guaranteed. This field study requires substantial walking, walking on uneven ground or pavement, strenuous activities, on-site travel that could induce motion sickness, use of stairs, high altitude activities that could induce fear of heights, limited food options for students with restricted diets or ALLERGIES, and high levels of air pollution.
