As colleges and universities adapt to the growing influence of artificial intelligence, academic libraries are increasingly taking on leadership roles in AI literacy and governance. At Rollins College, library leaders have emerged as key voices in helping campuses navigate the opportunities and challenges presented by generative AI.

Derek Malone, dean of the Olin Library, views the rise of AI-focused library positions as a natural response to evolving institutional needs. After a reference and instruction librarian retired in 2024, Malone chose to replace the role with an AI librarian position, recognizing that research platforms were rapidly integrating AI capabilities. He emphasized that libraries must adapt to contemporary demands, describing AI expertise as “today’s need” and arguing that libraries should shift resources accordingly. In his view, academic libraries are well positioned to guide students and faculty as AI becomes increasingly embedded in research and learning.

Terri Gotschall, Rollins’ AI librarian, highlighted the unique visibility and influence that comes with a specialized AI-focused role. She explained that her title often leads campus leaders to include her in discussions about AI policy and strategy, including task forces and departmental meetings. Because colleagues recognize her as an AI specialist, she is frequently invited to contribute expertise to conversations that might not otherwise involve library staff.

At the same time, Gotschall believes the distinction of being an AI librarian may eventually disappear. As artificial intelligence becomes a routine part of academic work, she expects AI knowledge and support to become standard responsibilities for all librarians. Rather than remaining a specialized function, she predicts that AI literacy, guidance, and instruction will become integrated into the broader mission of academic librarianship, making every librarian, in effect, an AI librarian.
